Smart home wiring for new builds Get the wiring right before the plaster.
Everything a smart home needs is cheap at rough-in and expensive afterwards. The right time to talk to us is before the electrical plan is final.
For homeowners
What to ask your builder.
Six things to put in writing before rough-in. None of them commits you to a smart home. All of them keep the option open.
- 01
A neutral wire at every switch
Smart switches need one. Adding it after plaster means cutting walls.
- 02
Deep wall boxes at every switch
Smart switches are deeper than standard ones.
- 03
Each room's lights on their own circuit
So every room can be dimmed and scheduled on its own.
- 04
Power above every window that will get a blind
A motorised blind needs power at the head, not a cord at the floor.
- 05
Data cable to each Wi-Fi point, TV and study
Wired where it counts, so Wi-Fi only carries what it must.
- 06
A ventilated comms cupboard, central, not in the garage
One place for the internet, the network and the hub.
For builders and architects
A spec your electrician can price.
The Smart-Ready pre-wire spec sets out every position, cable and box depth on one page, written for the electrician at rough-in.
Offer it as a standard inclusion or a fixed-price upgrade. We mark up the plans, answer the electrician's questions and sign off before plaster.
Builder partner program [TBC]
All 240V work is performed and certified by our licensed electrical partner.
Rough-in timeline
When we're involved.
Design
Send us the plans. We mark switch, sensor, blind and data positions on the electrical plan.
Before slab or frame
Conduit to the roof space and the comms cupboard location are agreed with the builder.
Rough-in
Your electrician works from our pre-wire spec. We confirm neutrals, box depth and cable counts before plaster.
Fit-off
The Zigbee smart switches go in with the rest of the electrical fit-off.
Handover
The system is set up and tested before you move in, with the handover pack.
Send us the plans
Get the Smart-Ready spec.
Tell us about the project and we'll send the pre-wire spec, then follow up about the plans. [TBC]
